Description

Mary Rose makes pottery to feel connected to the earth. She uses different materials, such as clay, sand from the beach, and minerals, to create her art. Mary lives in Topanga, California, making each piece by hand.

One of her creations, the California Tea Bowl, is a small bowl, about 3.5 inches wide and 3 inches tall. It is a special clay in the valley, mixed with sand from the nearby beach, minerals from quartz mines, and ash from pine and lupine trees.

Mary even adds some oxide from the Mojave Desert to give it a unique color. For Mary, making pottery is like a slow dance with nature. She takes care of the soil, planting things that will one day become nutrients for the land.

These same nutrients become the ash that Mary uses in her pottery glazes. A cycle connects her deeply to the earth.

When you hold one of Mary's bowls, like the Tea Bowl, you might feel the energy of the clay in your hands. Each California Tea Bowl is not just art; it reminds us of our connection to the natural world and the beauty surrounding us.
